Science Doesn't Know Music

I love it when scientists set out to prove stuff and come up with some really outlandish and silly ideas, and try to back it up by saying that science says this, so it must be true.

A pair of doctors from the University of London recently released their top ten catchiest songs of all time.

Of.All.Time.

Dude, that is pretty awesome that science can determine what we all think of as being catchy.

Dr. Alison Pawley - a musicologist. What is a musicologist you ask? So do I, so I looked up a definition of it...

This is what Dictionary.com says:

musicologist

mu·si·col·o·gy

  [myoo-zi-kol-uh-jee]  Show IPA
noun
the scholarly or scientific study of music, as in historical research, musical theory, or the physical nature ofsound.
Origin:
1905–10; music + -o- + -logy

mu·si·co·log·i·cal  [myoo-zi-kuh-loj-i-kuhl]  Show IPA , adjective
mu·si·co·log·i·cal·ly, adverb
mu·si·col·o·gist, noun

Okay, so there really is a science to being a musicologist, who knew? I could have easily dedicated my life to studying music, no problem whatsoever.

I digress.

Along with Dr. Pawley is her colleague from the University of London, Psychologist, Dr. Daniel Mullensiefen. Together they did a study to find out the ten catchiest tunes of all time and they based their results on the following criteria: 1) Long and detailed musical phrases. 2) Number of pitches in the hook. 3) The singers were male (sexist). and 4) The pitch was noticeably higher.

According to Dr Daniel Mullensiefen's:

Every musical hit is reliant on maths, science, engineering and technology; from the physics and frequencies of sound that determine pitch and harmony, to the hi-tech digital processors and synthesizers which can add effects to make a song more catchy.
We’ve discovered that there’s a science behind the sing-along and a special combination of neuroscience, maths and cognitive psychology can produce the elusive elixir of the perfect sing-along song.
We hope that our study will inspire musicians of the future to crack the equation for the textbook tune.
Okay, so do you want to see what science has determined to be the top ten catchiest tunes, of all time?
  • 10. Living on a prayer by Bon Jovi
  • 9. Teenage dirtbag by Wheatus
  • 8. Brown eyed girl by Van Morrison
  • 7. I'm always here by Jimi Jemison
  • 6. Ruby by The Kaiser Chiefs
  • 5. Monster by The Automatic
  • 4. The Final Countdown by Europe
  • 3. Fat Lip by Sum 41
  • 2. YMCA by The Village People
  • 1 We are the Champions by Queen

See what science has done there? How many of those songs do you even recognize? Be honest.

Living on a Prayer is a great song, but I don't even think it is Bon Jovi's catchiest, what about "You Give Love a Bad Name" or "Wanted Dead or Alive?"

Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus - um who? I will admit to having heard the song before, but had no clue what it was until I went to YouTube and listened to it.

Brown eyed girl by Van Morrison deserves to be in the top ten, no doubt.

I'm always there by Jimi Jemison  - most of us have heard it before and never knew it more than the theme song for Baywatch. Yeah, Baywatch.

Ruby by The Kaiser Chiefs, I only know it from Guitar Hero, to be honest. Top ten material though, no I don't think so.

Monster by The Automatic, never heard of it or them before, have a listen...
I still say no.

The Final Countdown by Europe. NO. NO. NEVER, NEVER, NO!

Fat Lip by Sum 41 - I like this song and do find it catchy

YMCA by The Village People - I find this song, like I have always found this song - annoying as all get out. I will have to admit that it is catchy though, but I still don't like the over saturated pop song, and never will.

We are the Champions by Queen. Great song, no doubt about it, but when you think Queen is this the first song you even think of?

Off the top of my head I give you ten more that are worthy of being called the catchiest tune, in no particular order...

  1. Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis
  2. Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond
  3. RESPECT by Aretha Franklin
  4. Shout by The Isley Brothers, performed by Otis Day and the Knights
  5. Never gonna give you up - Rick Astley (you're welcome for my not including the video and completely "rickrolling" you)
  6. Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO
  7. I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
  8. Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da by The Beatles
  9. Another Brick in the Wall pt 2 (We don't need no education) by Pink Floyd
  10. Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys
Those ten came to me without really thinking too much about it and I'm sure there are more in my head that I haven't shared.

So what am I really saying here? I don't think science has anything to do with catchy tunes and I can pretty much guarantee that you can come up with a different ten than either science or I came up with.

Please share them all, or just one, of your catchiest tunes in the comments and we'll see how wrong science really is, in this case.

Jumbled, just the way I like it

Because I can and will I think I should do this writing thing now as opposed to later since I will have children to deal with, a wife to love and a work out that is more than way overdue to do. Try saying that last part fast five or six times; overdue to do...

So where were we? I wrote a quick story for Jessie last night, well not really for her per se but  suggested by her and I honestly think it turned out pretty good considering it took me about fifteen minutes to write and there will be lots of words to cut down and even some more to expound upon, or would that be expand from? Not sure the definitions of words in my head are matching up with the definition coming from various and sundry dictionary's. I love that I just used sundry there, as I have always had a strong feeling towards that particular word.

Not really.

However, if I ever were to fall in love with a word, sundry is no worse than say pickle, which just sounds nasty, and then there is the fascination that some people, mostly women, have with the word moist. Why is that I wonder? Maybe I should post that as a status on Plurk or Facebook or Google plus and take a survey as to why that is. Worse thing that will come from that will be... nothing really. Other than people ignoring me, for which I am fond of and thankful for. You see, if I were to become famous I would probably be miserable. Now if I were to be rich, well that I could probably handle.

Lost the rest of another tooth today - about eight minutes ago in fact, or was it more like twelve. Does not really matter in the end, but I think it is coming to a head here with my ignoring the tooth issue and I think that I will be in dire need, or at least some need of some new chompers be they dentures or implants, or maybe I'll just become gummy. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Now that was a phrase that pays oh so long long ago, what maybe ten years? Not nearly as good or as enduring as, if it is to be it is up to me. I so very much love that, along with the phrase all that jazz because of my affinity towards jazz music I guess, although if the truth were to be told I listen to pretty much anything with jazz being a ways down on the list, behind classical music in fact, so since we need to be telling the truth here, I figured that I would get that off of my chest. It is a beautiful thing, music, that makes the world go round and round. Just take a moment and stop what you are doing and listen to the music all around you.

Seriously. The next time you step outside, I want you to just stand there, or sit if you would like, and listen to the music that is playing all around you. You have the slight rustling of leaves, or branches in the areas where we have no leaves left on our trees, and tell me that you don't hear any music. Go ahead, try it, you will be amazed at what amount of noise is being made while being silent. Then you may even find yourself moving to the melody that the leaves, or branches, are playing. It's all good I tell you, and you will not be disappointed. Of course then you will have the obtuse sounds of motor vehicles sputtering along trying to overtake the sweet sounds of the rustling branches and leaves. Occasionally you will hear a sparrow chime in their part or better yet a robin. Ah, music is everywhere. It's even in my head as I am typing this, it kind of sounds like "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley, which brings back memories of a simpler time in my life when I was trying oh so hard to play grown up only to have it fail and I fell flat on my face, yet I still love the song and the image of the kid playing the drums in front of a video screen - such a powerful video and if you get a chance you should go and watch it, and I promise you this, if I post this on the blog, I will have it linked or embedded here, as long as it is legal and all.

By the way, in case you didn't catch that, I have my head phones on and that is the song that is currently playing...

See, I knew you could catch on to these things, just like how it has turned to "Sunset Grill" another excellent song, but one that doesn't hold me as much as "Boys of Summer" which kind of shows a point that I really didn't know I was going about trying to prove, which is music is great and all around you and everyone should stop and turn the volume controls up every now and again, either by being quiet, or plugging in your head phones. Sorry that came out all jumbled and confusing, just like myself every now and again, especially after a few shots of vodka - which I have not had, mind you, so I cannot use that as an excuse.

So where was I going with this today?

Oh yeah, Go Broncos!!

Pax!

So There's This Band

They are from Minnesota.

They love music.

Jeff is a great read as well, on his blog here.

They are the Receders, and they are pretty good. They also have a brand new CD available, just click the link over there on the side bar, or even here. You won't regret it, unless you are totally into something like hard rock or rap, in which case you should listen to some better music every now and again so why not give them a try.

It won't hurt.

I promise.

It's better than the five dollar foot long songs, at least*.

So...

* DEFINITELY better than the Cricket commercials.

77 Channels and Nothing On

That is what is going on in my head. Seriously. All of a sudden I have a whole bunch of story ideas running through my head (no fluffy bunnies, thankfully). Now, I have a bigger problem. Too much noise.

Why is it always one extreme or the other? It seems to be an all or nothing deal in my head - no middle ground. At. All.

I have an isolationist story.
I have a shipwreck story.
I have a serial killer story.
I have at least four different stories regarding saints.
I even have a social networking story.
I have a historical fiction idea.

Believe me when I tell you that this is just the tip of the iceberg, Believe it or not, each of the above mentioned story ideas, has at least four different options. Noise. Noise. Noise.

At least I'm not whining.Much.

Let me take you on an adventure kids and tell you about a great book that I just finished: About the Author by John Colapinto. As you may be aware, the book is the first selection in a new book club, started by Holly, that I joined with fellow bloggers. I am looking forward to the discussions, which start in two weeks. It is the only book where I have read the word coccyx. Twice. No kidding, I should let TexasHolly know. I mean she is definitely fascinated with hers. Or, I should say her readers are.

I downloaded several (ten) songs tonight for my little iPod. Wanna know what they are? I 'll tell you anyway, since I am actually pleased with them all.
  1. My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson (Definitely pop and dance, but I really like her voice and she uses it to her full potential with this song)
  2. Gives You Hell - All-American Rejects (I like their sound and this song has a nice little beat to it. Plus it's a bit vengeful)
  3. Sober - Pink (I have become a bigger fan of Pink with each new song of hers I hear, I think that she has a great voice as well and an attitude that comes through her music very well)
  4. Untouched - The Veronicas (I have never heard of them before, and actually bought this song on, more or less, a whim and a thirty second soundbite. I can be impulsive, at times, sometimes it works, others it does not. I believe it worked here.)
  5. Womanizer - Britney Spears (Don't say it, because the song is actually pretty good, and I am glad that I bought it. So there.)
  6. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey (Classic stuff. Takes me back to high school, and this is really a great song that still plays well today. Plus I think it is in the top 50 iTunes songs.)
  7. I Don't Care - Fall Out Boy (Got to get my Emo fix, yo. Actually this song comes across as more alternative than Emo, whatever that really is. We used to call it grunge, I think.)
  8. Tarantula - Smashing Pumpkins (Not sure if this is their brand-new song or not. I bought this because I read an article blasting Billy Corrigan about selling out and, I think, this is the song they were talking about being used in a Hyundai commercial. I like it)
  9. Lips Like Sugar - Echo & the Bunnymen (Brings me back to those wild and carefree days, or something like that.)
  10. What's My Age Again - blink-182 (Like most of their songs, lots of fun and easy to listen to. Works as a pick me up also)

I'm currently bobbing my head to 'Womanizer' by Britney Spears.

Still like it. :P

What Time Is It?

Summertime!

How is that possible in December, you ask?

High School Musical 2, that's how.

Let me explain.

This is the latest fascination by one of my children, even though they call it "Musical 3!"

Yesterday, my first day of my official work stoppage (figures that I didn't post anything, right?), and that is what I had the 'pleasure' of viewing.

I had the pleasure of viewing this Disney masterpiece not once.

Not twice.

Nope, not even three times.

We are talking FIVE times! Yes five, the number after four and before six! Almost one time per child. I think that if Andy wasn't working, it would have been on for number six.

Okay, that's probably not true, because while Andy does enjoy the movie (I think), even he wouldn't sit down and watch it FIVE times!

I should also mention that I did not actually sit through this all five times, I mean I have a Dr. Who marathon that is keeping me up late, and two little monsters (Danny and Maggie) that are getting me up early. They must not have received the memo about my work stoppage.

Back to the latest and greatest fascination with High School Musical 2, extended version by the way. Which means it has an extra song, yea!

Now Roger you are babbling and not saying much... How has HSM2 fascinated one of your children?

I will elaborate ...

In my house, if you walk into a room and say "What time is it?" you will not get a simple "It's Nine o'clock Dad." No, that would be too easy. Instead you get "It's summertime!" Which is, you guessed it, a line in the movie.

Cute, isn't it?

Yeah, it is. Then you get more like this, I can say "I want more," and my child will start to sing the song "Fabulous," or "Get out of the pool," will get the response, "don't get a third."

If you want this child to sit quietly for an hour and a half - good luck! But you can start by putting on HSM2, and get scared by the intensity that this child shows when these images are being broadcast from the DVD player to the television. I mean I hope this child pays this close attention to something really important, like a Daddy lecture for instance.

Okay, that IS a pipe dream, I imagine, but I can dream right?

So which child is so taken by HSM2, you ask?

Why Danny, of course! Yes, the two-year old. He cracks us up when he starts reciting lines from the movie, or better yet, breaks into singing one of the songs. It's so cute.

So cute, that I can hardly wait for the twenty hour drive to Disney World.

I mean it is only ten times I have to hear it, right?

The Sentinels of Zion!

At least two of the six members, anyway.

That's Andy on the drums, and Father Fasano on lead vocals and guitar. They entertained us before Chris Padgett talked this evening. They are pretty good, if I say so myself, and I am really proud of him, and everyone else in the band, which consists of four seniors, a priest and someone I really don't know, just that his name is Carl. Oh yeah, and there is Josh, who runs the sound board, don't want to forget him. :)

They have a decent little following as well. Maybe I'll get a hold of the video my son Benjy took that has all their screaming fans.

I have a new mission, I think. :)

Creation Trail Mix (aka My Muse and the number 400)

We had this in my Sunday School class this week, and the kids loved it, so in honor of post number four hundred.

400! Where did you pull that number from, there is no way, NO WAY that you have written 400 posts... Next you'll be telling me that you have people that actually READ this stuff!?

Well actually...

Well actually what?

I have five. See. Over there, on the right?

Yeah, but one of them is YOU!

Oh, you noticed. Maybe people are just shy about admitting that they read me.

Or maybe you just made them up, I mean ANYONE can set up a blog - even you.

Glad you noticed that as well.

I also noticed that you are not on topic, and may have to change the title.

Why? I'm still leaving the recipe.

But what about all this? I mean will they understand that the different (and annoying) color is me. While the normal (and boring) is you.

I think that they will figure it out. They are very smart - smarter than me, in fact.

Well, d'uh.

Can I post the recipe? The kids NEED to get into bed before Jenni gets home.

Sure whatevah.

Whatevh? What the heck... never mind!

Whatevah!! :P

On with the recipe:

Which is only ingredients, because you can make as much, or as little, as you like.

CREATION TRAIL MIX
Day 1 - Day and Night (Oreo Cookies)
Day 2 - Heaven and Earth (Frosted Mini-Wheats)
Day 3 - Seas and Land - (Blue and Green M & M's)

An Album Cover To End All Album Covers(not to mention a really cool band name)

Hello all!

I was lurking like I like to do, when I can't get to sleep. Anyway, I went over to Damama T's blog and read a very touching tribute to her mother who passed away twenty-four years ago. While there I (and I do this at every blog I visit, because you never know where it will lead you).

It led me to Kathy:I am who I am and this neat little experiment, which ironically she got from Damama T - talk about some weird sense of synergy, eh?

But I digress (trying to keep up with Kalynne, don't ya know. She's the digressing champ{Is that even a word?}).

Ugh. Your point?

Oh yeah, An Album Cover that is created through a whole bunch of randomness (actually three random web pages, to be honest). Then after creating said cover, well you see if it fits you to a 'T.'

So here are the instructions:

Go to the following websites...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random(The first article title on the page is the name of your band.)

http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3(The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.)

http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7daysThe third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

Got it? I'm not putting in links, (although it looks like they may be there, not sure...) well because Kathy didn't do it, and I'm not sure if it would screw something up - does that make sense? Whew! Are you all still with me? Anyway, just copy and paste the URL into your address bar and it should work just fine.

Now for my cover...

My band name and album title:

Geriojennsa ~ 'Enjoyment of One's Self'

There you have it. Does kind of fit you know, except maybe the whole (Geriojennsa is a genus of moth in the family Arctiidae.) part. :) That's okay, I kind of like the name for a band... (I got dibs!)

Good Night and God Bless! (for real this time)

They Write The Songs...

That I am liking, at least at this moment in time. :)

Here is a list of,

SONGS THAT HAVE CAUGHT MY EAR

1. Picture To Burn, Taylor Swift - I tell you what, this seventeen (yes, she's seventeen) year-old can write some good songs. I like all three of her releases from her debut album; Our Song, Tears On My Guitar and now this one. I think she has another one with Alan Jackson in the title, or was it Tim McGraw? Oh well. If you get a chance, check out Picture To Burn, it's good.

2. All Summer Long, Kid Rock - I really don't know why I like this song. It kind of reminds me of Kenny Chesney's I Go Back, because it reminisces about growing up - or something like that. It also samples a couple of songs; Warren Zevon's Werewolf In London and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama. Give it a listen, you may be surprised and actually like it.

3. Beat It, Fall Out Boy - Can't beat a Michael Jackson song, right? (Pardon the pun) Actually they do a pretty good job with it, I was pleasantly surprised and I am sure all of the EMO fans of theirs just jumped off the nearest bridge. Hmmm. That might not be so bad. :)

4. See You Again, Miley Cyrus - Yes, the Hannah Montana girl has done really well. Guess what? She really can sing too. I know my daughters always told me this, but... well you know. Don't be fooled by her being only fifteen (I think), the girl has some talent. I think she already has more hits than her Achy-Breaky Heart dad; Billy Ray Cyrus.

5. In Love With A Girl, Gavin DeGraw - I don't know much about him, but I did enjoy this song when I heard it, literally half an hour ago. It has a nice beat and the lyrics aren't obscene, so... It might be worth a listen, if you are so inclined.

6. Dance Like There Is No Tomorrow, Paula Abdul - I have always enjoyed her dance songs, and this one is no different. I wonder how many of those people that watch American Idol even knew that she could sing - and dance (she is a former Laker Girl, and she has choreographed routines for the likes of Janet Jackson). True she does seem a little loopy, at times, on the show. But I think she is more real than Simon.

7. Mercy, Duffy - This is a nice soulful singer that I think blows Amy Winehouse out of the water. I think she is even sober. :) Anyway, I LOVE this song. So much so, that I have nothing else to say, lest I ruin it for someone. (No, I don't know what I mean, sorry)

That's my list for today. I know, it's only seven, but that's all I feel like talking about, new music wise. Ain't nothing much else out there, that is new - ish. Not my fault. :)

Have a great day and God Bless!
