Shaving Easter Eggs

So, we were feeling adventurous and wanted to try something new this Easter, when it came to coloring eggs at least.

Let's see if I can do a "how to" with the help of some photos and my kids.

First off, boil some eggs. We put eggs in cold water and then bring them to a boil, remove from heat, and let the eggs sit covered for approximately fifteen minutes. Now, you can boil the eggs for five minutes to make sure that they are cooked. We didn't cook them long enough once and the results were not pretty. Think runny goo. :)

Next, prepare your tray, or in our case bowls (we did the tray first and the kids didn't like the colors, so we switched to bowls). Preparing the tray/bowls is pretty easy, you take shaving cream (Barbasol is pretty cheap, so we used that), shake the can and spray the cream into each bowl or tray.

Next, add your food coloring. My kids wanted some with just one color and some with multiple colors, so we had a lot of bowls out (picky kids).

You then stir the food coloring, with either a toothpick or a spoon. One batch we mixed it up too much (I think) and we ended up with green goo, and the colors didn't seem to be as vibrant. They still had color though, but they were more of a pastel.

After stirring in your food coloring comes the fun part.

I don't have a picture of the actual rolling, but the result looks like this.

And the kids look like this.

And this.

You might want to use gloves, but the kids didn't seem to mind.

After your eggs are smothered in a colorful mess, you let the eggs sit and dry - this will help the colors adhere to the egg. We let them sit for seven minutes.

Now I have read elsewhere that you wipe the eggs off with some paper towels, but that seemed wasteful and messy to me, so we just rinsed them off with water. I don't think it made a difference, so you do it whichever way you desire.

First batch

Second, more colorful batch

And that is that.

Have a messy, fun time. :)

Google Reader is...

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Retiring. Effective July 1, 2013.

What???

So what will I do now?

I mean how will people ever see me now?

How will I become famous and wealthy and wise even?

Probably not from here, that's for sure. Anyway, I've decided to join Bloglovin, and may even join up with Feedly, who knows. Anyway, in case you read me through Google Reader, have no fear, you can still find me at Bloglovin once July 2 comes around.

That is all.

My first....

Post from an iPad, at least I think it is. The mind plays tricks on the old man every now and again.

So, what do I talk about?

How about how the Colorado Avalanche totally owned the Chicago Blackhawks last night? I actually had a feeling that it was going to happen, and even texted my son Andy to tell him so. Why? Well for one thing the Av's is one of the few teams that can actually skate with the Hawks, and they proved that two days prior, when they almost beat the Hawks at the United Center. Second, it w at the Pepsi Center in Denver, which is in the mile high altitude. And it was bound to happen. :)

What else? Danny turned seven this past week. Such a fun age. Actually it's a blast. All my kids are a lot of fun, except maybe when they are cranky, but I'm no fun when I'm cranky either.

Okay, I'm gonna make this short, since it wasn't really planned, or something like that. Besides I need to start chauffeuring the kids around soon.

Enjoy the day!

Sunday Almanac #2

Location:  Batavia, Illinois. Home.

Weather: Clear and a cool, well cold for some, 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Music: The soundtrack behind The Parent Trap 2, which is playing in the other room.

Book Reading: A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book five. page 267 of 1016 - slow going. Hopefully this week will be better.

Mood: Happy

Reflection of the day: I spent the entire day with my family, the first full day in three weeks and it was grand. I even got some things accomplished, not as much as I should have I'm sure, but enough to keep one seven (actually he's still only six, but turns seven this coming week) year old happy. Now I need to make the ten year old happy. We went to Mass together and watch 'Swiss Family Robinson' together. I didn't watch the 'Parent Trap 2' but I could still hear it.

Quote of the day: "Creativity is a great motivator because it makes people interested in what they are doing. Creativity gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea. Creativity gives the possibility of some sort of achievement to everyone. Creativity makes life more fun and more interesting. ~ Edward de Bono
